The Darkest Dungeon is a very popular game for all who love RPG and gloomy worlds. Fans of this game created hundreds of mods that affect gameplay, plot, characters, and design. Developers also please us with DLC packs. Some new official features make mods from fans outdated so be sure to download only playable modifications. You can find almost all files here: https://www.nexusmods.com/darkestdungeon/. You also can download mods from Steam Workshop.
In this article, we will focus only on the most interesting and high-quality mods. Let’s start!
Gameplay mods
Here we include all modifications that affect gameplay including big expansions and minor useful items. Check all notes and don’t forget to back up files before installing mods. We highly suggest these modifications:
- Pitch Black Dungeon.
A clear winner of our rating, this mod changes and improves everything. Do you hear about huge expansions for XCOM? Here we have the same mod for our beloved game. It brings new user interface, new inventory, new enemies and playable characters. The first quest of Pitch Black Dungeon will guide you through all innovations so you don’t need to read notes.
In this mod, you will face over 750 foes, 220 pieces of lore, 85 potions, 9 diseases, 30 town events and even more! All gameplay features were rebalanced and redesigned to make the gameplay more fresh and challenging.
Attention! It’s highly suggested installing this mod only after you’ve completed an original game. Download Pitch Black Dungeon if you wish to get new experience and discover a completely new story in a familiar setting.
Also, there is a small mod which only brings a new UI from this huge expansion. The updated interface is more clear and readable. Try this if you want something new, but didn’t complete the original story yet.
- Lone Crusade.
Do you want to try a really hard game? Then download this mod. Forget about parties and supporting. You are the Crusader named Reynauld. And you are alone. Yes, in this modification you have to complete the game with only one character! Of course, enemies and other in-game obstacles were simplified to make the finishing possible. However, Reynauld isn’t immortal and in case of his death, you should start from the beginning.
- Anti-Grind Stage Coach.
Well, we all know that the game is hard. The Stage Coach brings low-skilled apprentices which cannot replace dead adventurers effectively. This mod allows you to hire strong folks in the Stage Coach. Of course, you can hire only heroes which suit your level. For example, you can easily replace a dead high-leveled character with a new one, but you cannot summon such hero at the start.
There is also mod named Large Roster. It expands your squad so you can review more hiring options at once. We suggest installing these two mods together,
- Stacking Inventory.
It’s frustrating when you should throw out cool items during the mission, isn’t it? This pack offers a solution. It changes amounts of objects and options of inventory so you can stack all items. Modification affects gems, things for quests and two kinds of supplies: Firewood and Dog Treat. You can stack first supply to 5 units and the second one to 8 units.
- More Districts Building.
Districts were introduced in the Crimson Court DLC. These buildings are pretty expensive, but they bring you cool bonuses. This mod adds new Districts with a lower price for each playable class. So you can easily unlock more new buildings and receive their benefits. Note that this mod works only with the DLC.
- Super Heroes.
Do you feel frustrated because of constantly losing? Just install this mod and proceed to the final quest in few hours. The modification makes your heroes almost unreceptive to damage. However, adventurers still can be killed or weakened by stress.
- Xbox One Button Prompts.
Yes, there are gamers who love to play with controllers. The game itself allows you to use only PlayStation 4 buttons. With this mod, you may use buttons from Xbox One. Sure, it’s not so huge change, but it also affects gameplay.
Skins mods
If you are tired off same outfits and appearances we suggest downloading mods with skins. They affect the only visual side of the game and don’t change other features. So you can enjoy new looks with familiar stats:
- Geralt.
It’s a new look for the Bounty Hunter. It replaces original hero appearance with Geralt from The Witcher series. The author covers all aspects of appearance, silver sword, signs of witchers and, of course, the appearance of Geralt.
- Abyss Watcher and Darkwraith.
Here you can find skins for the Grave Robber and the Bounty Hunter. This pack features Dark Souls series so it’s recommended for fans. The Darkwraith totally changes an outfit and appearance of the Bounty Hunter while the Abyss Watcher just looks stylish.
- Faraam Knight.
It’s another jewel for fans of Dark Souls series. This mod replaces the Crusader’s normal outfit with a new appearance. Try to install it even if you didn’t play Dark Souls because this skin looks very cool.
- Sunlight Warrior.
Moreover, there are even more skins from Dark Souls! Really, if the games have almost similar difficulty why there aren’t similar heroes? With this modification, you can add the most iconic hero from Dark Souls instead of regular Man-at-Arms.
- Unofficial Palette Expansion Pack.
You may not find skins for all classes. In this case, we suggest downloading expansion of common outfits. This mod adds 5 new color schemes for each class. Also, here are purple schemes for those heroes who didn’t receive this color from developers.
- Winter Wonderland.
It’s the first mod in our list that replaces backgrounds, not outfits. It brings winter to the Hamlet and other locations not underground. Add some snow in this dark game. Highly suggested to use on vacation!
- Dungeon Background Variations.
You have to complete hundreds of dungeons to beat this game. And same backgrounds all the time can easily drive you mad. Try this mod that adds new decorations to all existing locations. You will still see original backgrounds, but not so often.
- Epic Loading Screens.
Darkest Dungeon is epic and challenging. But loading screens here are not as cool as they could be. Fix this flaw with a new mod which adds outstanding screens. Here are epic images featuring heroes and enemies for every location.
Heroes mods
There are dozens of new heroes designed by fans. You may want to add certain classes which we will not describe. Don’t worry, just search for them in libraries of mods. Here we introduce the most interesting and well-designed classes:
- The Musketeer.
The Musketeer was introduced by developers as a reward for certain Kickstarter backers. But it was only redesigned for the Arbalest without new skills and tactics. This mod allows you to hire completely new Musketeer which is significantly different from the Arbalest. This class is still a good range fighter with some utility skills. Note that you can apply this mod only if you have the Musketeer’s assets.
- The Revenant.
Do you think that the Crusader and the Leper aren’t good tanks at all? Then you have to unlock the Revenant. He is so good-armored that other tanks refuse to join him on missions. The Revenant has high health, good PROT and surprisingly dangerous attacking skills. He can heal allies and inflict bleed. Don’t use him against unholy foes, better take the Crusader.
- The Warden.
However, if the Crusader is too simple for you to download this mod. It adds the Warden who is a good damager and support. She uses her banners to provide various effects both on allies and foes. The Warden can decrease DODGE and PROT, remove stress from teammates and heal them. This feminized Crusader comes with a cool appearance as well!
- The Pit Fighter.
He is big, he is brutal and he crushes enemies with his fists. The Pit Fighter is one of the brightest characters as this word can be applied to this game. The Pit Fighter looks like brigands from Ruins, but he fights in your team. He can destroy enemies with attacking skills and debuff them. This class is also a very good in taunting.
Enemies mods
Here we will describe only two mods, but you can find more. Choose which enemies you would like to encounter and download expansions:
- Unleashing Of The Kraken.
New heroes and classes are cool, but where are new enemies? In this mod! There are several mods which add new monsters and other types of foes. This one brings 5 new fiends to the Cove. The Kraken is the icing on the cake. To deal with this boss and his tentacles you should use an unique strategy. It will be fun!
- House Full Of Piggies.
Let’s continue our series and introduce this mod which is similar to a previous one. Do you already beat the Cove? So hire adventurers to deal with the Warrens! This mod adds several new enemies that belongs to the Swinefolk. To complete updated Warrens you should create new strategies as these pigs are walking nightmares.
All names listed above mods you can type at the Nexus or in Steam Workshop. Download them wisely and always copy original files. Have a good experience!
