Terraria is a game like no other. It combines the genres of: adventure, exploration, crafting, RPG and many more to create a full package that exceeds even the higher expectations. With so much to do in Terraria, you might wonder: well… Where should I start?
Don’t worry, every newcomer and sometimes even a more experienced player can start feeling lost and confused when starting. That’s why in this guide we’re going to give you tips on how to start and effectively construct a solid start in Terraria. We’re not going to go over world and character creation and will instead focus on the sole factor of gameplay and what to do once you’re inside the world.
First of all, many different guides and tutorials try to force some specific mechanics or habits on to you. We’re not like that. Our goal is to give out information that you can utilize to the best of your abilities. Let’s begin.
There are a lot of things Terraria players might disagree on in the starting points of the gameplay, but one of the top priorities right at the beginning that everyone can agree on, a shelter. Sometimes a thing like digging a hole might be enough, but you can make a shack pretty much effortlessly by cutting down trees with an axe. With safety and a place to return to set – you can go exploring on an adventure! Of course you can explore before a house is set, but you can die and then a respawn point won’t be set and you might be worse off. So we suggest (if you’re not very experienced) start with a house and wait for the right time to explore. Building a house is a few steps of construction. Make the wooden base, form the desired shape and craft doors, walls and fill in the interior. A workbench is very useful. Add up a few torches, furniture and don’t forget to assign the house to an NPC – the Guide.
The day and night switching is annoying and if you haven’t played Terraria before, might take some time getting used to. At night, it’s harder to survive and different monsters and threats can occur and fight you, such as Demon Eyes and zombies. Utilize all of your weapons and pick up everything that the NPC’s drop – you can throw it out later.
Next up – stack on resources. Trees and wood are very useful in pretty much every piece of construction. Cobwebs, ore, drops and fished items are a welcome bonus and addition to your inventory and progress.
Now that you’re set with taking care of yourself it is time to go exploring and expanding your knowledge about Terraria. Going to caves is probably the most effective way. You can dig down or search for gaps and caverns in the map. Just be careful, falling from too high is hurting your character. Don’t forget to kill slimes and have enough torch material to have illumination while in the dark zones. Don’t be intimidated by water and stay cool and calm.
Another handy tip – 20 stones should be converted in to a furnace as soon as you get back to your home. An anvil combined with resources in the inventory is a deadly sound for your enemies.
As you might expect, you’re going to have to explore a lot on your own. A guide can only help you so much as to give you guidance and rough know-how on what to do. The list here is a very very useful set of advices and tips gathered from many hours and days of playing and talking with other Terraria players.
Have fun and happy exploring!
