Lots of people tend to love a certain genre of games and will like pretty much anything in the genre. That’s common and natural. Basketball game fans tend to play every basketball game, FPS lovers buy FPS’s all the time and Gone Home is no exception… Except it’s kind of hard to pin-point an exact genre of this game. Nevertheless, gamespedition is going to give you recommendations on what games to try out next and those, which are similar to Gone Home. Without any delays, let’s start.
Games similar to Gone Home
For this list, gamespedition is going to suggest games that may not be of the same genre (completely), but provide similar emotions and stick with you for a long time. We’re focusing on combat-minimizing games that put their emphasis on story-telling and atmosphere rather than fighting mechanics.
The list:
- What Remains of Edith Finch – this first person exploration/adventure game has the same strong vibe as Gone Home. The action and narratives have similar details. The main character is a girl, trying to find out secrets and the past of her family. The story is told in a magical and completely one of a kind way by mixing tragedy, beautiful visualizations and writing to make one of the best experiences in a video game.
- Firewatch – a forest rangers – Henry sets out to solve a string of foul-play events and strange happenings, but instead, starts to uncover deep and dark secrets covering the forest that he’s working in. Firewatch reels you in with its believable characters, beautiful writing and stunningly stylish visuals.
- Dear Esther – more of a story with interactive features rather than a video game, Dear Esther combines poetry, beautiful British Isle-esque landscape, story about seclusion and solitude, mystery and exploration in one in order to get the best possible result.
- Kentucky Route Zero – taking control of Conway, a delivery man, you choose the way Kentucky Route Zero’s story is told and what its characters are like. The game is very visually appealing and the animations of characters and objects are top notch. Although the puzzles and the story may lead you to believe and expect a lot more from it, than it can possibly offer, nevertheless this is still a very worth to play game.
- Unravel – the story of a string figurine exploring the mystical and magical areas of the backyard and elsewhere really shows that the story doesn’t have to have a good dialogue in order to make you feel for the character and get immersed. The best thing about Unravel is that it doesn’t feel constricted by rules or laws. It’s a fluid experience that won’t be duplicated.
- Oxenfree – this retro side-scroller is similar in style to Kentucky Route Zero, only with much more vivid colors and a dialogue with voice acting. This game focuses on teenage relationship dynamics. You answer to questions and each thing that you say impacts your relationship. The best thing this game can teach you is that you have to make choices.
