Overview

Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion is an indie horror adventure game distributed freely through Steam and Desura. Players are tasked with traversing the winding, dark corridors of a procedurally generated mansion, under the watchful eye of the cute, mischievous ghost girl, . As the title suggests, the game employs a variety of jump scares, ranging from silly cardboard cutouts to violent death screens.

The game is notable for its settings, which start out as cute and funny but slowly spiral into darker themes like child murder, reflected in its changing textures and ‘specimens’--who may chase the player at any given time; all of which reference old horror games like and , as well as Internet ‘creepypastas’.

The game was initially released in late 2014 on Desura , and Steam a few months later. The game is currently in open beta on both outlets, as well as for free, with no plans to charge for the full product upon completion. While the game has not enjoyed the same sort of viral popularity as past indie-horror darlings like and the series, it is currently picking up steam among YouTube personalities—some of who currently make appearances in the game.

Gameplay

The bulk of the game comprises of traveling a seemingly endless mansion, often through corridors and rooms that bear striking similarities to each other. The overall goal is to traverse 1000 rooms, without being murdered by a handful of 'specimens':the name given to the assorted ghouls and psychopaths that roam the depths of the mansion. Failure to avoid these creatures result in a one of many horrific deaths. While players can pick up at the last save, the order in which the rooms appear are random.

The game is broken up into 50-room sections, with an elevator that transports the player between each one, as well as acting as a save room. Most of the rooms and corridors are small, linear and identical--a point noted by an unseen character early in the game--though as the game progresses, players are acquainted with a growing variety, some with puzzles and branching rooms.

Currently, the game is technically 'unbeatable', as the developer has not yet released the total amount of rooms needed to complete the game.
