Betrayer (0)
Overview
Betrayer is a horror game with distinctive graphics, set in during British colonization in 1604. It is being developed by , a company founded by a group of former employees who worked on and .
The game was available as a Early Access release starting on August 14, 2013, and a complete version was launched on March 24, 2014.
Gameplay
Betrayer takes place in several small open levels, unlike other games Betrayer has no traditional objective markers. Instead, spacial audio cues are used to alert the player of nearby enemies, loot, clues and NPCs. Players progress through each level by cleansing the world of corruption, to do so they must travel to the otherworld, a haunting limbo between life and death. In the otherworld, visibility is reduced and skeletons and ghouls wander the forest. Wind plays an important role in stealth, gusts of wind offer a brief window where the player's sound is masked by the wind.
Journal
The journal is the central storytelling device in Betrayer. Each location in the game has a story which unfolds through uncovering clues in the real world and using their knowledge in dialogue with ghostly NPCs in the otherworld. The journal tracks all clues, people, notes and investigations. Through the journal, the player can review clues in order to reveal the story. Many stories are completely optional, however the Maiden in Red's story is required to complete the game.
Weapons
Pistol | The pistol is the strongest weapon type in the game, it not only deals great amount of damage but also staggers enemies and nas no chance for deflection. Very short range and lengthy reload time. |
Musket | The musket is the second strongest weapon type in the game. A standard musket has the longest reload time. While it doesn't pack the punch of a pistol, it makes up for it with a moderate range. Low deflection chance. |
Shortbow | Although the damage dealth by the shortbow is minimal, it has the quickest rate of fire and a fairly short range. Offers damage bonus for sneak attacks and arrows can be reused. High deflection chance. |
Longbow | Moderate damage and long range weapon with a quick rate of fire. Offers sneak attack damage bonus and arrows can be reused. Moderate deflection chance. |
Crossbow | Last weapon type discovered, has high range, damage and moderate reload time while still offering sneak attack bonus. Bolts can be reused. Low deflection chance. |
Tomahawk | Only throwable weapon in the game, minimal range but deals massive damage. No deflection chance. |
Within the various weapon types are various conditions. Enemies will drop poor condition weapons which deal less damage and have a greater chance for deflection (rusty, weathered). Higher quality weapons (common, quality, exceptional) can be purchased at the merchant and higher tier weapons are unlocked as the player progresses through the game. In addition to normal weapon types, there are special weapons which are typically found in the rocky mounds which can only be dug with a spade, obtained late in the game. Special weapons are better than any weapon you can buy from the merchant.
Charms
Charms offer passive bonuses to the character, a maximum of three can be equipped at once. Like weapons, their condition (weathered, common, quality, exceptional) affects the charms effectiveness.
Charm of Vigor | Increases maximum health. |
Charm of Soldiery | Reduces reload speed. |
Charm of Ferocity | Increases melee damage and attack speed. |
Charm of Swiftness | Increases movement speed. |
Charm of Grace | Reduces chance for enemies to hear or see the player. |
Charm of the Red Maiden | Increases movement speed, health and decreases chance of enemies to see or hear the player. (Obtained after completing the main quest) |
